2026 Visit to Shuttleworth Air Show

Another glorious summer’s day greeted visitors at Old Warden airfield on Saturday 25 July, and thousands made their way to the 2026 event. It was an exceptionally busy occasion, with tickets selling out well in advance. Visitors were reminded that there would be no tickets available on the gate, and those who arrived without a pre-booked ticket sadly found themselves turned away.

The AirUK turnout was smaller than usual, with many of our regular attendees having other commitments and a large number sending their apologies. This is often the case during the summer months (and around Christmas), although when it comes to historic aircraft and the weather, summer is really the only option. As organisers, we attend regardless, and we always enjoy the opportunity to share the day and the memories with our former colleagues.

The airfield was certainly packed. The familiar vintage buses were once again running along the tarmac, much to the delight of the many children enjoying the open-air rides. Personally, I was drawn to the sight of the steam roller steadily making its way around the site, a wonderful piece of engineering, although perhaps not something you’d expect to see parked alongside the cars at Tesco!

The heat was intense, but it created the perfect backdrop for a very special celebration. Spitfires appeared in abundance, with several beautifully restored examples arriving and parking up. Later in the day, a formation of nine Spitfires took to the skies, helping Shuttleworth achieve its ambition of creating a fitting tribute for the Spitfire’s 90th birthday, with these iconic aircraft seemingly everywhere you looked.

The weather did, however, present some challenges. Forecasts suggested that a weak weather front would move down from the north, bringing increasing winds as the evening approached. Thankfully, both planned flying displays went ahead, although the second display had to be adjusted and the Edwardian aircraft were unable to take part due to the stronger winds.

Another memorable day at Shuttleworth: beautiful weather, historic aircraft, and a wonderfully busy atmosphere. A great day to share with old friends and colleagues.
